:flag:

10 curtain calls!

All press reviews praising Ivan (in the usual way: "despite of..."), and most of them praised all production.

There is an entertaining comment in another forum - very surprised by the public's response...

Congratulations!

Dear Mashi_Masherr, it must have been such an enjoyable evening! And the unexpected end, to a score of Freddy Mercury )))! It just fits Ivan so well, that celebration should end in an informal, playful mood, both artists and public having fun together, to the sound of "I Want to Break Free!". Ivan wants to break free? wants us to break free? wants ballet to break free? Maybe all of them?

He certainly has overridden many limits and rules in these ten years, and I love that he was bold enough to dare the strict, deeply conservative world of ballet, pushing its boundaries right from within. He doesn't fit the mold because of lazyness, as some insist to say? Nonsense! you look at the result and what you see is different priorities and individuality - that, it is quite obvious by now, come out of deep love for ballet, plus a fierce internal drive and no fear of disapproval.

That he was ill, running a fever, and performed anyway, making sure it was a great evening, speaks volumes about the artist's generosity and professionalism.

Of course, I'm lucky: unlike many balletomen, I don't like skinny legs, but this is hardly relevant. More important for me is that he ignores and proves wrong several crystalized notions that (IMHO too) are misguided and have been stifling life out of Ballet, leading it to dead ends. This is just one of the reasons I'm a great fan. Other reasons are imbedded right in his way of dancing and performing, and surprise, the mighty jumps are not the most important ones!

It really pays off to be a fan of Ivan Vasiliev, and be on the receiving end of so much commitment, creativity, strength and grace. I wish much joy, health and peace to my favorite dancer, he well deserves it, for (already!) 10 years of insane dedication to work, but even more for his artistic achievements.

Wow! What an ode!

Hahaha...  is it? Even if I don't say he's divine :flirt:  :flirt:? or break in tears just because he stepped on stage... :D  :D ?

I think I have good reasons, quite matter of fact and sound, to like Ivan Vasiliev :writing:.

Anyway, a recent interview. Didn't make me like him less!

А разве была в его жизни такая женщина? А если и была, кто она такакя, чтобы о ней вспоминать?  :dontknow:

Yes. She did. And I'm sure speaking about her past in such a way she probably would.

Dear Privet, I feel disapproval to my comment? Why? I was maybe too laconic, and gave the wrong impression.

What I meant to say is, since their break-up  neither Natalia or Ivan seem willing to speak at length about their relationship - private or professional. In fact, BOTH mentioned each other explicitely in interviews - sometimes, when asked a direct question. Then they usually say their partnership was important and a good one, that they respect each other as great professionals and are still friends - and nothing beyond that.  One or two phrases. One would not expect less, but both kept it at this neutral level - it is their choice, and I respect it.

(It is of course possible I missed  an interview that was different, but I think I read all of them, since I'm a great fan of both).

If I had to make a bet, I would say the main reason for not being more open is they are wary of the press, gossips and slanderers. Both were treated very disrespectfully at the time of their break-up, and a long time after. Their words were twisted, wild interpretations were fabled that didn't fit even the few known facts, and both received easy labels, not flattering for either of them. Any journalist allowed to raise the issue of their partnership would insist on discussing why it ended - of course the hottest point from the media's point of view. They may not speak exactly because they respect each other, and their current life partners: no fuel for more gossip!

Not mentioning the fact everybody knows - that they left BT together - he gives fuel for gossip. IMHO.

There are really strange coincidences.

Today a newspaper of Barcelona published an interview of Ivan made to Maricel Chavarría of La Vanguardia, made on 7 March, when he was there rehearsing for the Gala of Russian Stars. It means the interview happened before our discussion. They talked, among other issues, about the partnership with Natalia, about Ivan following her to Mikhailovsky, about Nacho Duato as Artistic Director.

And interestingly, out of their talk comes the expression "he followed his beloved to Mikhailovsky". When we think about, in Bolshoi Ivan Vasiliev had the prospect of performing Ivan The Terrible, that would be staged again after many years BECAUSE of him.  It is hard to believe he would take the initiative to leave Bolshoi before his debut in the role - to perform Ivan The Terrible was one of his dreams, as he had said himself.  There was no need to hurry. He was already a star. He was just 22 years old, had lots of time ahead. If he really wanted to leave, it could happen any moment in the future. Even receiving a tempting offer, he could negotiate with Mikhailovsky, postpone the agreement - he was in high demand and had bargain power.

But maybe Natalia had made up her mind, did not want to wait, and he did not want to leave her - even if it meant giving up his Ivan The Terrible and incurring in Grigorovitch's displeasure. "Followed his beloved" indeed makes sense.

Dear MaggiM!
Regrettably I can't read the article as I can't speak Spanish.
Who followed whom then we won't learn any more.
But in my opinion they both left BT not for the sake of Mikhailovsky. Their aim was ABT. Mikhailovsky gave them the possibility to dance in America. The end we know.
What we discussed and what was odd - not mentioning Osipova as an important part of his life as an artist. Saying "I left BT". But it's his choice. The history remains the history. :flag:
