Everybody knew that this would be happening, but noone expected that it would happen that soon: Nikolaj Hübbe (photo: Camilla Winther) is leaving Det Kongelige Teater Copenhagen, already before his contract as artistic director of the Royal Ballet ends in 2026. The theatre informed the public, that Hübbe made this decision because of a long illness. „With the title of ballet master also comes the responsibility to pass the baton on at the right time, which is why I have chosen to stop now", says the 56-year-old, who was ballet director since 2008. „Nikolaj Hübbe has been an excellent ballet master for the theater and a strong ambassador for spreading ballet to as many Danes as possible“, says the chairman of the board of Det Kongelige Teater, Lars Barfoed. Hübbe graduated from the Royal Danish Theatre's Ballet School and worked as a dancer at the Royal Ballet and at the New York City Ballet, performing in Bournonville and Balanchine ballets.
